Zwick-Roell is expanding the hole expansion test according to ISO 16630 to include AI-based crack detection. The new system is integrated into the BUP sheet metal forming testing machine and automatically detects through cracks in real time. The exact moment when a through-crack forms is critical. This is where the new application comes in: A neural network detects cracks during the test.
Unlike traditional image processing methods, this does not require manual tuning of material-specific parameters. Image processing takes approximately 50 ms per image on a standard inspection computer; an additional GPU is not required. The AI was trained using more than 657,000 images from approximately 2,700 samples. Crack annotations comply with ISO 16630.
