SMS Group is supplying a secondary copper smelter to Ames Copper Group, a joint venture between Prime Materials Recovery Inc. and the Cunext Group, for the site in North Carolina, USA.
The new plant will be designed for an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes of copper anodes and is scheduled to start up in 2021. This makes it the first copper recycling plant in the USA to produce copper anodes from copper scrap and copper fines.
The complete plant to be supplied by SMS consists of a tilting melting and refining furnace, an anode casting wheel and a gas cleaning system. The electrical and automation systems are also included in the SMS scope of supply, as is technical support during plant installation and commissioning.
SMS is also responsible for the technical design of the core components and prepares the plant for later expansion for digitalization. With this project, SMS underlines its position as a leading system supplier for the non-ferrous metals industry.
