The high-tech company Trumpf and the optics manufacturer Layertec are entering into a strategic partnership, thereby strengthening their competencies for the display industry. To this end, Trumpf is investing in extensive machinery for the production of large optics, which the company has partly taken over from optics specialist Berliner Glas. Such large optics are used in the latest laser systems from Trumpf, which are designed in particular for production processes for modern OLED displays.

“Layertec is a highly innovative company and a reliable, long-standing partner and supplier of Trumpf,” says Christian Schmitz, Group Managing Director at Trumpf responsible for the Laser Technology division, and adds: “With this strategic partnership, we are further expanding our technology leadership in laser technology. It strengthens our autonomy and thus our position in the market.”

Layertec is based in Mellingen, Thuringia, near Jena, and currently employs almost 330 people. “With the help of the new machinery, we are expanding our production towards even larger optics that are used in the Trumpf systems. The cooperation with Trumpf will now be even more intensive – we both expect even more synergies from this in the future,” says Layertec Managing Director Hartmut Heyer.

Trumpf and Layertec will commission the machinery in a multi-stage process at optics specialist Layertec. Trumpf brings machines, tools and processes to the partnership. Layertec contributes production competence of optics and thus ensures the production of large optics for the Trumpf laser systems.

“The display industry is a strategically important market for Trumpf. With this partnership in a very dynamic environment with high growth potential, we are strengthening our independence from global market developments,” says Richard Bannmüller, CEO of Trumpf Laser- und Systemtechnik GmbH. The parties have agreed not to disclose the amount of the investment in the machinery for the production of large optics.
