90 years of innovation leadership

Trumpf power tools have been around for 90 years. In 1934, the first product – an electric hand shear for cutting sheet metal – triggered a revolution in the sheet metal working industry. With numerous other patented new developments, Trumpf quickly became the leading manufacturer of hand-held sheet metal tools and continues to impress with its innovative products to this day.

The wide range of scissor innovations are an essential part of the ninety-year success story of the Trumpf Power Tools division. In 1934, the motor-driven “HSU 1.5” hand shears provided a start from zero to one hundred, making it possible for the first time to cut thin sheets up to 1.2 mm thick precisely, easily and quickly at four meters per minute. Thanks to its low weight of just two kilograms, it allowed fatigue-free working even back then.

But Trumpf tin snips have also made a name for themselves in the recent past. For example, in 2004, when the company presented a world first with the TruTool C 250-0 PLUS slitting shears. It cuts sheet thicknesses of up to 2.5 mm without distortion and also has an integrated chip breaker that can be operated with one hand, which is particularly practical when cutting spiral pipes with double sheet thicknesses.

Cutting, joining, edge shaping and more

But it’s not just shears that have become an integral part of sheet metal working. The company, which has been developing and manufacturing its products in Grüsch, Switzerland, for over 40 years, has repeatedly set numerous milestones.

As early as 1959, for example, the first electric hand nibbler THN 100 succeeded in implementing this advantageous cold cutting process in a power tool. With this technology, thin and thick sheets can be cut equally emission-free and without the influence of heat. Or in 1963, when Trumpf was granted the patent for the welding edge former technology that is now used worldwide as the TruTool TKF 700 and TruTool TKF 1500 for preparing weld seams on external and internal contours and on tubes.

In 1999, Trumpf came up with another innovation: the TruTool TPC 165 panel cutter for cutting sandwich panels up to 165 mm thick. Many tradesmen like to use it – roofers, façade, hall and container builders as well as refrigeration, heat and sound insulation professionals.
And in the 2000s, too, Trumpf power tools regularly broke new technical ground. In 2003, for example, the company presented the TruTool TKA 300 edge milling machine for the first time, which produces chamfers with a high surface quality. In 2006, the TruTool TSC 1 support strip cleaner for flatbed laser machines caused a worldwide sensation and also became a bestseller. The latest product from 2023 also makes work easier for companies that use highly productive 2D laser cutting machines: the TruTool PS 100 parts separator. With its help, small parts can be easily and quickly removed from the residual grids of the processed metal sheets.

“Customer benefit is always at the heart of all our developments,” emphasizes Silke Kastner, International Sales Manager of the Power Tools division at Trumpf. “That’s why we started using rechargeable battery technology early on to make the users of our devices independent of the power grid. First we used nickel-cadmium batteries, then lithium-ion batteries, which offer twice the runtime and are 40 percent lighter.” Here again, it was sheet metal shears that played a pioneering role in 2008: the TruTool C 250-Li cordless slitting shears and the TruTool S 250-Li cordless shears.

Numerous Trumpf tools are now available as cordless machines. In addition to shears, these are mainly nibblers and joining presses. The current battery technology used shows just how advanced Trumpf is in this respect. “As a leading manufacturer of hand-held sheet metal tools, we have been part of the cross-manufacturer CAS battery platform since 2021,” explains Silke Kastner, International Sales Manager of the Power Tools division at Trumpf. “In our view, there is no alternative to standardized battery platforms. CAS currently brings together more than 40 manufacturers who offer a total of more than 400 machines with the same battery interface.”

Trumpf uses CAS 12V and 18V LiHD batteries with 4.0 Ah for its tools, depending on the application. LiHD technology is regarded as a world leader. Because it stands for more performance, service life and running time.
