“The new Smart Factory is a clear sign of our commitment to our US customers and our deep appreciation for their business. Trumpf will continue to stand for innovation, technology and growth in North America for years to come,” said Nicola Leibinger-Kammüller, CEO of Trumpf. The new plant utilizes Trumpf’s high-tech manufacturing equipment to produce sheet metal parts for Trumpf machines manufactured in the US. Customers can also visit the factory to get an idea of automation solutions, digital networking of machines and data-driven production. The total investment is around 40 million US dollars.

Additional technology and demonstration options

Manufactured in Farmington, Trumpf’s state-of-the-art machine tools are used in the production of metal components for cars, airplanes, agricultural machinery and fitness equipment. “The future requires smarter, more connected and more competitive manufacturing. Now is the time for companies to improve their production methods and develop their workforce. We are helping companies across North America do just that by providing manufacturing technologies and services,” promised Lutz Labisch, President and CEO of Trumpf in the US. The Smart Factory expands the current production space on site by around 5,200 square meters and houses laser cutting machines as well as bending machines and welding systems.

Local-for-local strategy

The Smart Factory is part of an ongoing “local-for-local” strategy for production in the state of Connecticut, where the company has had a presence since 1969. Trumpf manufactures all of its laser cutting machines and connected automation solutions for the North American market in Farmington, where it recently commissioned a new production line for the manufacture of laser tube cutting machines.

New design for production

The building, designed by Berlin architects Barkow Leibinger, is modern and sustainable. The windows are fitted with special “smart glass”. They allow more or less insight into the building as required, offer UV protection and create a pleasant climate inside. The roof of the new building is designed for the installation of solar cells in order to be able to produce as sustainably as possible in the future.
