The Turkish steel manufacturer Kardemir commissions the SMS Group with the modernization of its wire rod mill in order to be able to produce wire rod coils in a transport-optimized way.

The Turkish steel producer Kardemir (Karabük Demir Çelik Fabrikalari A.S.) based in Karabük has placed an order with the SMS Group for the replacement of selected key components of its wire rod mill. The wire rod mill to be modernized is part of the SBQ (Special Bar Quality) plant supplied by SMS in 2013, which produces 700,000 tons of bar steel, coiled bar steel and wire rod per year. The aim of the modernization is to produce more compact coils especially for transport and shipment by container.

Thanks to the new ring distribution system, the packing density is improved

The outer diameter of the coils is reduced from 1,080 to 1,040 millimeters. To ensure that the coil height remains unchanged, the inside diameter has been reduced from 850 to 820 millimeters.

In detail, the SMS Group’s scope of modernization includes a coil layer, a coil forming chamber, a new lay-up tube holder and a lay-up tube with a new diameter, as well as the automation for the new coil forming area, which will be integrated into the overall automation of the SBQ plant.

The facility will be commissioned in early 2021 and will secure Kardemir’s leading position in the market for transporting quality products by container.

Kardemir processes billets with dimensions of 150 x 150 millimetres and 170 x 170 millimetres and lengths of 6 to 12 metres. The material processed ranges from high carbon prestressed concrete steel and cold heading steel to ball bearing steel and free cutting steel. Processing into bar steel, coiled bar steel and wire rod takes place at a production rate of 150 tonnes per hour. The wire rod produced here is manufactured in diameters of 5.5 to 25 millimeters and laid into coils.

Kardemir, founded in 1930, is one of the largest industrial companies in Turkey with 4,500 employees and a production output of 3.5 million tonnes per year.
