Automated component pickup by robot replaces conventional mechanical clamping devices. Since retooling is no longer required, component changeover takes place in a matter of seconds.
The Poly Robot Automated Fixture System, or PRAFS, automates the virtual clamping (VC) of Carl Zeiss GOM Metrology’s ScanBox technology. With PRAFS, the previously manual component positioning is replaced by a robot-controlled holding technique: The universal robot-supported multi-pickup was developed by the measurement specialist Protos-3D Metrology (Eching near Landshut).
Quick component change, higher utilization, no costs for mechanical devices
The system stores several thousand different setups (holding positions for components), which can be called up from the component list at any time via a human machine interface (HMI, touch panel for short). Once a component is selected, the robots move to the component-specific loading positions. The part is inserted and the measuring process is started by pressing a button.
A changeover between different component types, for example from passenger car inner door panel to a fender, can be realized in less than a minute. The entire measurement process is very fast, reproducibility is extremely high and operator influence is minimal.
PRAFS replaces conventional mechanical fixtures, which are costly and time-consuming to manufacture. In addition, they require large storage capacities and can only be reused to a limited extent in the event of component changes. The multi-measurement recording, on the other hand, can be adapted to all modifications.
Simple operation
PRAFS is self-explanatory and easy to use. The HMI guides the operator through the individual steps and, for example, gives clear instructions on when to insert or remove the component. This is done at an ergonomic, effort-saving working height. Since the measurement sequence is determined by the system, component handling influences are virtually eliminated. Specialized knowledge to operate PRAFS is not required.
The high level of automation and digitization gives measurement technicians more time for their actual tasks.
Multi-recording saves resources
Compared to conventional clamping devices, PRAFS and Virtual Clamping save manufacturing processes, transport routes and storage capacities, thus conserving resources.
PRAFS is suitable for use in prototype construction, for initial sampling and series monitoring, for measurements during production, component analyses and the verification of supplier parts.
The system can be integrated into most existing Zeiss ScanBoxes (from SB6130, SB6135 and so on).
PRAFS will be presented for the first time at Control 2023 in Hall 9, Booth 9502.
