Whether shipyard or steel rolling mill, when it comes to preservation lines that have to meet special requirements, companies worldwide rely on Rösler’s expertise. This is based on technical know-how, many years of experience and successfully implemented reference projects. Another aspect is the project teams consisting of employees from the respective Rösler subsidiaries on site and specialists at the main plant in Untermerzbach. Two examples.

China Merchants Cruise Shipbuilding (CMCS) is one of the leading manufacturers of expedition vessels, floating platforms and floating cargo cranes. Until now, CMCS has contracted out the conservation of the sheet metal and profiles required for this purpose to specialists. This was to change with the expansion of business activities to include passenger and cruise ships, as the shell of a medium-sized passenger ship alone consists of 25,000 tons of steel.
Accordingly, a partner was sought for the establishment of an efficient conservation line. After intensive market research, the Chinese company decided in favor of Rösler. The decisive factor was the technical implementation and efficiency of several reference projects in European shipyards, which Rösler was the only supplier to demonstrate.

The two-line preservation solution, which is around 180 meters long, consists of a sheet metal line (main line) into which the parts from the profile line are fed. In addition, straightening equipment for the sheets and profiles, a fully automated painting system and a thermal afterburner are integrated. All plant components are integrated into the higher-level production system of CMCS. Machining is performed at a feed rate of 5 meters per minute. © Rösler Surface Technology

Competitive advantages through fully automated, interlinked preservation

The 180-meter-long preservation solution, which is individually tailored to CMCS’ requirements, consists of a sheet line, known as the main line, and a profile line from which the blasted profiles are fed into the main line. In addition to the two roller conveyor shot blast machines with optimally adapted Gamma 400G or Rutten Gamma 400 HD turbines, straightening systems for the profiles and up to 12,000 mm long sheets, a fully automated painting system including paint supply and a thermal afterburner are integrated.

All plant components are networked and integrated into the shipyard’s production system. The parts can thus be processed fully automatically from the loading zone to the removal zone at a feed rate of 5 meters per minute.
The short throughput times with high process stability and reproducibility as well as minimal manpower requirements contribute to the fact that CMCS has gained a competitive edge with the preservation line, as does the robust and wear-optimized design of the line.

Preserving steel sheets in a new dimension

One of the largest manufacturers of steel and steel products with operations in the USA, Canada and Mexico awarded the contract for the new preservation line to Rösler. Here, the good experience with a preservation line delivered to another location years ago was the decisive factor for the well-known US company to again decide in favor of a solution from Rösler. The dimensions of the steel sheets to be processed, with a width of 4,300 mm, a length of 18,000 mm and a material thickness of up to 200 mm, required an adapted design of the preservation line.

Loadable up to 7 t/m

For example, the entire line, in which the sheets are preheated, blasted, painted and dried, is designed for a load of seven tons per linear meter. Typically, two to three tons per linear meter. The integrated 4,500 mm wide roller conveyor blast machine has 10 Gamma 400G turbines with a drive power of 30 kW each. They ensure that a homogeneous blasting result is reliably achieved over the entire width of the sheets at a feed speed of 4 m/min and ensure high productivity.
