Seversky Pipe Plant, a company of the TMK Group, has awarded the SMS Group the final acceptance certificate for a heat treatment line for the quenching and tempering of pipes at the Polevskoy site in the Sverdlovsk region of Russia.

With an annual capacity of up to 300,000 tons, diameters between 168 and 370 millimeters, wall thicknesses of up to 40 millimeters and lengths of up to 13.5 meters, the new line in Sverdlovsk is one of the most productive in the world. The line can also process small batch sizes and different product groups cost-effectively.

The plant at TMK now has a fully automatic heat treatment line with all the equipment for quenching and tempering and thus meets all the requirements for the production of end material in high quality.

TMK can now also offer ready-to-install quality pipes for the oil and gas industry. After completion of the hot, cold and performance tests, TMK issued the acceptance certificate to the SMS Group. “Thanks to the high quality of the equipment supplied by SMS and the close cooperation between the expert teams of TMK and SMS group, both in remote service and on site, we were able to start up the line on time despite the Corona-related restrictions,” reports V. A. Toporov, Technical Director of the Seversky Pipe Plant.

The scope of supply included the complete heat treatment line, whose core components include the Quenching Head of the SMS Group. With its patented inner lance for pipe wall thicknesses of more than 25 millimeters, it is an outstanding product of the SMS Group’s research and development department.

Together with the Quenching Head, the newly designed inner lance from SMS ensures maximum heat transfer and thus facilitates the successful treatment of heavyweight tubes. This was difficult or even impossible with water tank systems or the previous designs of the inner lance.

The new, mobile design also significantly increases process speed and boosts production output by around 40 percent compared with conventional systems for internal cooling. SMS also supplied the complete water treatment system as well as the electrical and automation equipment for the entire heat treatment line.

The new heat treatment line from SMS strengthens TMK’s position as the largest steel pipe manufacturer and exporter to over 80 countries worldwide. TMK operates major steel pipe production facilities in Russia, Romania and Kazakhstan. The largest share of sales is accounted for by so-called OCTG pipes (Oil Country Tubular Goods).
