At Coiltech in Augsburg (March 26 and 27, 2025; booth 2-I22), LMC Europe focused on the WinSet electromagnetic high-speed punching press.

“Its patented high-speed electromagnetic technology uses the power of speed instead of pressure. By combining the high performance of a precision column frame with a punching speed of 5 m/s, the WinSet punch press is the ultimate machine press for many applications,” promises Dr. Peter Sterionow, President & CEO of WinSet Technologies. “Efficient cutting of electrical steel is particularly important for electromobility. That’s why our German parent company LMC Europe will be showing the presses live in action at Coiltech.”
Conventional pressure normally deforms the punch, die and workpiece and causes the tool to wear quickly. This wear occurs due to heat spreading from the cutting zone to the surrounding areas.
The WinSet punch press only needs around one millisecond from the start to the end of the cutting process. In this short time, the cutting zone forms a narrow band, while the heat generated in it has no chance to spread to the surrounding areas. This is also known as an adiabatic process. In addition, high-speed cutting offers various advantages:
– Lower processing forces: The plastic deformation of the material takes place in a narrowly defined zone, which means that the required processing forces are lower compared to traditional presses.
– Reduced tool wear: Due to the focused heat development in a very small zone, the material is separated even after the punch is only slightly immersed, which extends the service life of the tool.
– Improved surface quality: The heat generated ensures that the material softens locally, resulting in smoother cut surfaces.
– Greater efficiency: As less energy is required for cutting, the processing speed is increased, thus boosting productivity.
– Less burr formation: Targeted shaping minimizes burr formation on the workpiece, which simplifies reworking.
– Suitable for materials that are difficult to cut: Adiabatic cutting enables the efficient processing of materials that are difficult or ineffective to cut using conventional methods.
The electromagnetic design of the WinSet punching press cannot be compared with any other press system on the market. Thanks to the extremely high stamping speed (speed instead of force), the high-speed press produces what WinSet claims is the best possible edge quality – with clean, burr-free edges – on virtually any material. Many of these systems are used in clean room environments for the production of computer components as well as medical and surgical products.
The high tool speed ensures a longer tool life and enables longer tool usage times. As there is only one moving part, WinSet’s press systems are virtually maintenance-free, according to the company.
“Another advantage of our punching presses is their compact size,” adds Dr. Peter Sterionow. “Incidentally, high-speed presses have been used in production in the USA for 50 years and they not only cut metallic materials, but also plastics and even fabrics. Over 1,000 of these presses are already in use in the States today. With LMC Europe, we now want to focus more on the European market and usher in a new era in manufacturing technology.”
Background
WinSet Technologies, based on Long Island in the USA, specializes in the design, development and manufacture of high-speed electromagnetic stamping presses. Originally known as Lourdes Systems, WinSet has a history dating back to 1954. Today, WinSet is the market leader among high-speed press suppliers and counts renowned companies such as General Motors, GE Aircraft Engines and DuPont among its customers. LMC Europe is pursuing the goal of making the advantages of high-speed cutting known in Europe as well.
