SMS Group enables SSAB to produce Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS) for the automotive sector with a focus on sustainable manufacturing.

SSAB, a global market leader in steel production, has signed an Early Services Agreement with SMS Group for the supply of a cold rolling complex for the steel mill in Luleå, Sweden. This project is a significant step towards sustainable steel production and underlines SSAB’s commitment to green technologies and processes.

With a production capacity of around 1.3 million tons per year, SSAB will be able to meet the increasing demand for third-generation advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), especially for customers in the automotive industry. The project includes advanced technology, including a pickling/tandem line with CVC technology, a continuous hot-dip galvanizing line, a continuous annealing and galvanizing line and a rewinding and inspection line. These key components ensure that SSAB can deliver its specialty products in high quality.

Fully electrically heated ovens from Drever use a combination of induction and electric radiant tubes to reduce CO2 production to a minimum. The precise regulation of the coating thickness by Duma strip zinc stripper nozzles ensures optimum surface quality. Robotics applications and logistics systems from Amova optimize the material flow and logistics processes within the new cold rolling complex.

In addition, comprehensive automation and digitalization solutions ensure production efficiency, process stability and product quality. The scope of delivery also includes the most important ancillary systems such as an acid regeneration plant, roller workshop, coil logistics and water treatment systems.

The cold rolling complex can process strip widths of up to 1,900 millimetres and thicknesses of 0.30 to 2.5 millimetres, thus covering a versatile product range.
