Reduction of environmental impact of steel production is a declared goal

SMS group and PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk sign Memorandum of Understanding to promote “green” steel in Indonesia.

As part of their partnership, SMS group and PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk jointly organized a two-day “Focus Group Discussion (FGD)” in Jakarta, Indonesia. Under the motto “Green Steel in the Digital Age: A Focus Group Exploring CO2 Footprint Reduction,” this landmark event brought together key stakeholders in the Indonesian steel industry.

During the event, SMS and GRP signed a memorandum of understanding underlining the commitment of both companies to the further development of sustainable methods and processes in the steel industry through digital solutions.

Argo Sangkaeng, President Director of GRP, was very pleased about the cooperation: “We are proud to co-host the Focus Group Discussion with SMS and are convinced that this partnership will have a positive impact on the Indonesian steel industry. We hope to see innovative and sustainable solutions that help reduce the environmental impact of steel production.”

Among the prominent speakers at the event was Tim Kleier, Head of Green Steel at SMS. In his presentation, he provided insights into pioneering decarbonization strategies and discussed the impact of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on the industry. In doing so, he outlined the path to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable steel industry.

Lis Soares, Head of Energy Management at SMS, discussed strategies for quantifying and reducing CO2 emissions in steel production, addressing the complex situation regarding CO2 taxes. Bernhard Steenken, Co-Chief Sales Officer India & Asia Pacific of the SMS group, also presented green technologies to reduce CO2 emissions in steel production. He emphasized: “We are very pleased to participate in this Focus Group Discussion together with GRP. We are convinced that this collaboration will have a positive impact on the Indonesian steel industry. This format provides a valuable opportunity to look at innovative and sustainable solutions that help reduce the environmental impact of steel production.”

During the two-day event, this initiative acted as a central platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience between stakeholders who are deeply involved in environmental issues. The stated aim is to strengthen cooperation within the industry and promote joint efforts to reduce the CO2 “footprint” of the local steel industry.
