H\u00fcttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Salzgitter AG, after the co-shareholders Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe and Vallourec announced their intention to withdraw from the joint venture. <\/h3>\n<p>Salzgitter plans to invest in an electric arc furnace in Duisburg to transform the site and reduce CO2 emissions from steel production by 90% over the long term. However, this transformation will be accompanied by a significant reduction in the number of employees, as announced by the new parent company. The plan is to reduce the number of employees at HKM from the current level of around 3,000 to approximately 1,000 in the long term.
