To achieve this, a German manufacturer of drive and maneuvering systems as well as control systems for ships and offshore applications invested in a roller conveyor blasting system, among other things. It enables the semi-automated processing of various flame-cut parts and steel sheets, largely replacing manual blasting.  <\/h3>\n<p>It was the invention of the all-round steerable rudder propeller in 1950 on which the success story of Schottel GmbH is based. The innovation quickly turned the company, founded in 1921, into a globally sought-after developer and manufacturer of marine propulsion systems. With nine series in a power range from 50 to 30,000 kW, the company now offers the largest portfolio of propulsion and control systems for ships and offshore applications. Marine services are also offered: Remote access, data collection, data evaluation, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. For example, those responsible in the welding shop at the D\u00f6rth plant were able to make the production processes more efficient and powerful by integrating a sheet metal line. This included the integration of an automatic sheet metal storage system and a plasma\/autogenous flame cutting system as well as the conversion of the blasting process from cabin blasting to continuous blasting.  <\/p>\n<p>In order to minimize personnel costs and intralogistics, the new roller conveyor blasting system was placed directly behind the flame cutting system in the line. One of the main processing specifications was that the blasted surfaces must have a roughness depth of at least Rz 70 \u00b5m. This is necessary to ensure that the paint adheres well during the subsequent painting process, which also covers maritime applications. Schottel therefore used an angular, abrasive blasting medium for cabin blasting to ensure quality. In addition, the new blasting system had to enable the processing of parts with very different dimensions and ensure high availability.    <\/p>\n<h4>Sophisticated and efficient system concept<\/h4>\n<p>In his search for a suitable blasting system manufacturer, Frank Steinert, production manager at Schottel, contacted R\u00f6sler Oberfl\u00e4chentechnik GmbH, among others. Based on the standard roller conveyor system RRB 22\/5, the Untermerzbach-based system manufacturer designed a system adapted to the customer&#8217;s requirements, including special painting. It can process steel plates up to 5 m long, 2 m wide and 500 mm high. At the same time, the roller conveyor with a roller pitch of 400 mm makes it possible to blast individual parts with a minimum length of 1,500 mm. With an additional transport rack, solid parts shorter than 1,500 mm can also be processed.<br \/>\nThis means that a large proportion of the flame-cut parts used at Schottel can be produced much more efficiently. The blasting program stored in the system control is conveniently selected by the system operator on the touch panel.     <\/p>\n<p>The system is made of 8 mm thick manganese steel as standard, and the blast chamber also features interchangeable, overlapping plates made of the wear-resistant material. Six high-performance Gamma 400G turbines, each with a drive power of 15 kW, ensure consistent blasting results &#8211; three each blast the parts from above and below. They have throwing blades in a Y-design. Compared to conventional turbines, they achieve up to 20 % higher blasting performance with reduced energy consumption.   <\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Y-shaped throwing blades can be used from both sides, which at least doubles the service life. The conversion can be carried out easily using the quick-change system and with the turbine installed. Another plus is the filter unit, which is located on the roof of the system and therefore requires no additional floor space. &#8220;The system and equipment concept appealed to us. In this case, they were not carried out at R\u00f6sler&#8217;s Customer Experience Center, but at one of R\u00f6sler&#8217;s customers. This customer has been using an almost identical machine with identical turbine equipment for around three years. The tests not only proved that the blasting result is reliably achieved &#8211; but also that the round blasting grain is gentle on the machine. The parts blasted by the reference customer were evaluated using measurement technology.    <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To be on the safe side, we subjected the test parts to internal paint adhesion and salt spray tests,&#8221; adds the production manager. The discussions Steinert had with the reference customer regarding operating costs, wear behavior and maintenance frequency were also decisive in the decision for the roller conveyor blast machine from R\u00f6sler. &#8220;The results of the blasting tests and the experience of the reference customer convinced us completely that the RRB 22\/5 was the right choice for us and met our quality requirements,&#8221; explains Steinert.  <\/p>\n<p>The early involvement of the plant manufacturer in the planning at Schottel also proved to be an advantage. This meant that information and layouts were available at an early stage regarding the dimensions to be taken into account for the system and how it could be optimally planned into the hall.
