Benteler Steel\/Tube and thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg made a joint commitment to sustainability and climate protection. The two companies have now signed a memorandum of understanding on the supply of CO2-reduced starting material, so-called slabs, from the Benteler electric steel mill in Lingen to thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg. The agreement provides for a continuous volume ramp-up of the material produced with green power until 2027.<\/h3>\n

“Through our sustainable commitment, we are ensuring that climate protection and economic efficiency are better reconciled. At the same time, we are supporting our customers in achieving their own climate targets,” says Ralph Mathis, Chief Sales Officer (CSO) at Benteler Steel\/Tube, pleased with the path we have taken together.
\n“We are delighted to have Benteler as a partner who will fully support our decarbonization strategy by supplying CO2-reduced slabs,” adds Jens Sch\u00f6llnershans, Head of Procurement & Supply Management at thyssenkrupp Hohenlimburg. Dr. Henner Diederichs, Head of Sales, adds: “Another milestone on the way to ‘green steel’ – for our customers and for climate protection.”<\/p>\n

Benteler’s “Green Pipes” Strategy<\/h4>\n

The Benteler Steel\/Tube Division has set itself the goal of being CO2 neutral by 2045 as part of its “Green Tubes” strategy. The company’s own electric steel mill in Lingen is at the heart of achieving this goal. In the steel mill, steel scrap is recycled by electric arc furnace, thus starting a new life cycle. The steel produced there can be cast as billets or slabs. Benteler uses billets to manufacture tubes in its own tube mills; slabs can serve as starting material for strip steel.<\/p>\n

Compared with the usual blast furnace route, the Lingen electric steel mill already produces over 75 percent fewer CO2 emissions for a low-alloy steel grade. By using green electricity, this value is again significantly reduced.<\/p>\n
